Starting the search

So how did the search start. I started with just simple stuff, how much did I know about my immediate family and what did living members know about the past lines of family. This alone can build a good foundation of the family tree to continue the search from.  Where possible try to obtain accurate dates for births, marriages and deaths.  For UK families the registers of Births,Marriages and Deaths can help in the search and copies of Certificates can be requested (for a fee).   Marriage Certificates also show occupations and this can add to the depth of knowledge about family members.

Parish records of Burials and Christenings can help but not all people are buried and not all people are christened so be aware this will leave gaps

Welcome!

Hillocks is the name.  Yes indeed, where do people called Hillocks come from, where do they live now. How did we get there?  I have always been interested in my family history simply because, when I was younger the only people I knew with the surname Hillocks were my immediate family. This site is a bit of a personal mission to find out more.  If you have the surname Hillocks send me any information on your family history and I will try to join the pieces together.

This is my first attempt at a Blog so no doubt it will change over time

So first let me introduce myself.

Peter Hillocks, born 1958 in Chatham,Kent, England. Son of Terence Michael Hillocks born near Hastings in Sussex England. Worked in the NHS form 1976 to 2005 and moved to New Zealand in 2005.
